The city of Sakai made its Sakai, Cool City Declaration in 2009. It supports corporate R&D on advanced environmental technologies and promotes the environmental awareness of local citizens.

2. An Eco-friendly, Low-carbon Community―Yusuhara, Kochi prefecture
/ 生き物に優しい低炭素なまちづくり~高知県・檮原町~

Yusuhara makes rich use of its natural environment, subsidizing the installation of solar panels, regeneration of the forestry industry etc. on the basis of the revenues from its large wind turbine facilities.

3. Aspiring to be an Eco-friendly Capital―Minamata, Kumamoto prefecture / 環境首都のまちづくり~熊本県・水俣市~

Minamata, the city where pollution caused the neurological Minamata Disease, is moving on through diverse citizen-based eco-activities to become Japan's most environmentally progressive municipality.
