In 18th century Japan a magistrate, Maki Bunshiro meets with the recently widowed Fuku. She was Bunshiro’s first love. They hadn’t seen each other in 20 years. They reflect on their pasts. Bunshiro was the son of Sukezaemon, a low-ranking samurai. After seeing his father help save the village rice fields from flooding, Bunshiro resolved to be just like him. His father, though, was unjustly put in prison. Bunshiro didn’t know what the future would bring: the death of his father, parting with Fuku, struggles within the clan. How would he survive these troubles? Could he reinstate his father’s honor?
